Sent on Behalf of Dr. Oakley School PPA:

Dear Dr. Oakley Parents/Guardians,

This is the most important fundraiser we do as a school. It only comes around once every 2 years and provides valuable funding for our student computers, equipment, special events, and sports residencies...

Dr Oakley Casino Volunteers Needed - October 27th & 28th at Elbow River Casino.

If you or anyone else you know can volunteer at this Casino please sign up at:

How does this benefit my child at Dr. Oakley?

On average, Casino funding contributes $70,000 every two years. This is the most important fundraising activity we do as a school. It pays for:  Chrome Books/Computers, Sports Residency (Rugby, Lacrosse), Software, Library Books,  Artist-in-Residence, Field Trips, Sports Equipment, Speciality Reading Materials & more!

It may feel like a big commitment, but it’s VERY valuable for our school. Each volunteer shift brings in approximately $2,000. Plus, it’s actually a lot of fun to meet others in our school community!

Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before, you’ll get all the training you need.

You also get a free meal during your shift.

Why would I volunteer, my child is no longer attending Dr. Oakley in the fall?

Dr. Oakley, as you know, is a unique school. We have few students and approximately half of the students leave every year. It is very hard to fill the needed 40 volunteer spots when only 70 families are continuing. Our last casino had at least 10 volunteers from families who had left the school and we had to rely on parents working more than one shift.

As a parent who has been at Dr. Oakley for the past two years, you may have missed the opportunity to volunteer at the last casino in 2022 but your child has benefitted from the funds brought in. The casino funds pay for the individual computer your child uses every day. As well as field trips, special speakers, supplies for “option classes” and sport residencies.

We hope you have found this special school valuable and would like to allow those coming in behind us the ability to have the same unique experiences.  In other words, pay it forward, because others supported your children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “working a casino” mean?

All casinos in Alberta require volunteers for them to run. Volunteers are responsible for the count room.  Some of the roles to fill are:

− Take chips to game tables when they need to be refilled.
− Pay out customers who want to cash in the chips they have been using.
− Count the money the game tables have brought in during the day.

All jobs are computerized and there is a paid supervisor to walk everyone through the process.

Would you like more detail on each job?  Email droakleycasino@gmail.com and we will send it to you.

Who can work in the casino count room?

Anyone who is 18 years of age and over, who does not have a criminal conviction and has not excluded themselves from entering a casino.  You do not need a police clearance.  Volunteers can be grandparents, uncles, aunts, friends and adult siblings. No experience necessary.

How do we get there?

There is free parking on site. If you don’t drive but would like to volunteer, we can set up carpooling for you, or we can pay for a cab (this needs to be established before the event, so please speak to us). We will be at the Elbow River Casino.

Thank you very much!
